Ditch that basic vase and treat yourself to a customized vase thats easy and affordable, but still stunning, of course! Amp up your floral game and display flowers in a homemade vase that you'll be able to use again and again! Bonus: This easy DIY minimalist and geometric painted vase takes just a few minutes to make.
All you need is a plain vase, some paint, and an ink pen to create this gorgeous handmade vase that we picked up from Ikea. We decided on clean and soft lines to create a minimalist design that still packs plenty of visual punch. Another tip to make any project feel more modern? Choose colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel- in this case orange and blue.
Step 1: Start with your base paint color. If you can’t find one that’s exactly right, don’t be afraid to experiment and mix one up yourself like we did! We wanted a peachy-orange that was bright and fun but still light enough not to steal the show from the flowers. If you’re making this as a gift, keep in mind the color palette of the home this vase will live in.
Step 2: Once your paint is mixed and ready, use a wide brush to brush on a horizontal stripe all the way around the vase. If you want a more precise look, you can use painters tape to make clean edges (like we did when we made chalkboard paint labels for our indoor herb garden). But we decided for this project we wanted that hand-painted freehand look. Let the first coat dry and add a second coat if you need to.
Step 3: Add a little flair with some posh polka dots! You can use paint if you want to for this step but we actually really love the look of alcohol ink. The ink allows light to come through the glass so you can see the brilliant blue color of the dots. We used alcohol ink before on fabric and on some decorative plates and mugs, but we hit the jackpot when we found this alcohol ink pen at our local craft store. We painted our polka dots in a tilted circular pattern for a minimalist modern look.
Step 4: Finally, add some beautiful blooms for mom! If you need tips on how to arrange your flowers, be sure to check out all our tips on floral arrangement hacks and tricks (like putting clear scotch tape in a grid across the top of the vase to make bouquets look more full!).
For inexpensive flowers that’ll give you the most bang for your buck, be sure to check out the local wholesale flower market or even the farmer’s market. You can usually find better blooms at way lower prices while supporting a local grower in your area. If you’re a super over-achiever, you can even go the day before and store the flowers in your fridge overnight to keep them fresh.
We love this vase so much we might even make a matching one for ourselves!
