Having a denim jacket to throw on completes any outfit, day or night, fancy or casual, so it's no wonder the 90's staple is back. Update the look by adding your own spin on the classic! Dress up your denim with a punch of personality by adding some adorable DIY yarn pom-poms. This super easy fashion upgrade is one you can knock out in an afternoon, but rock the look all year long. Because, of course, everything is more fun with pom-poms!
We’ve done some awesome pom-pom projects before- like this freakin’ adorable DIY pom-pom pillow and this pom-pom lamp shade with our girl Jeanine Amapola– but this time we’re taking our poms to the streets with this sweet fashion DIY!
90’s fashion is having a moment and we are loving it. Our go-to look in the 90’s? A tried and true classic denim jacket. And if you don’t already have a denim jacket, you can usually pick up an awesome vintage find at your local thrift store for cheap. We’ll show you how to take your denim duds to the next level by adding these adorable and chic mini pom poms!
Step 1: You can use a pom-pom maker (like we did in this post on our cozy DIY pom pom accent pillow), but if you don’t have one- no worries! You can use a fork. Yup, you read that right. A fork! Just hold the end of the yarn with your thumb at the base of the fork, then twirl the yarn around the prongs- our perfect number turned out to be about 20 times. The more yarn you twirl, the puffier the pom will be!
Step 2: Take a second piece of yarn about 4 inches long and thread it through the middle of the fork prongs. Tie tightly and slide the yarn off the fork, pulling the knot as you do. Double knot nice and tight to secure the middle of your pom.
Step 3: Use scissors to cut along the folded edges of the yarn. As you cut, the ends will split apart creating a spherical pom pom! Roll it between your palms to puff it out a bit and trim any long pieces to make that perfect round shape.
Step 4: Start smack dab in the middle of the shoulder seam and sew on your first pom with your needle and thread. Then space out the rest of your poms about 3 inches apart from each other so they run in a symmetrical line down each sleeve. So cute!
We’ve been loving this look so much we’ve been wearing our pom jacket non-stop. And we’re not sorry about it.
